TRC - IECE Lecture Series … a Huge Success!

During the months of March and April, TRC-IECE designed and held a lecture series (4 events) featuring 4 leading minds to influence child development and understanding. Teachers came from all over the city to attend the event and about 1/3 of the participants attended all 4 events. The feedback was unanimous that the series was very informative and gave lots of fresh ideas, perspectives and understanding. Our dedicated and committed graduates of the ECE-CP generously volunteered their time and co-led the series. The schedule for the series was:

29 March, 2010: Exploring Piaget’s Ideas

31 March, 2010: Exploring Erikson’s Ideas

07 April, 2010: Exploring Bronfenbrenner’s Ideas

14 April, 2010: Exploring Vygotsky’s Ideas

The Third Group of TRC - IECE  Students Graduate

Teachers’ Resource Centre (TRC), the pioneer in introducing a curriculum and an institute (IECE) geared specifically to revolutionize and reform the way early childhood education (ECE) is approached in Pakistan, bid farewell to their third batch (2008 – 2009) on July 15, 2009.

The exhilaration, anticipation and empowerment were palpable, as these fresh graduates would now embark on exciting and fulfilling careers as professionally trained Early Childhood Educators.

Besides its revolutionary and out of the box thinking one of the reasons TRC is so successful in the education sector is due to its ability to view education as a unit regardless of whether it is the private or the public sector.  As a factor, this view has caused many of the ex students to volunteer to continue being involved in various capacities and help carry the TRC pedagogy forward, helping impact the sector as a whole.

The much awaited graduation ceremony for the third group took place at TRC on the eve of January 27, 2010 and, it was well worth the wait. A well-balanced mix of history, vision and humor, the evening was mainly led by TRC’s Director, Seema Malik.

The diversity, yet the unity of the batch was highlighted as former students pitched in anecdotes from their classrooms, reflected on the program, the imperative skills and knowledge they gained from it, plus video and digital images took the audience on a journey through the classrooms, personifying the impact on the students of the innovative teaching style.

The ceremony’s end saw Chief Guest, Mr. Aziz Memon, awarding the certificates to eager graduates and Ms. Mahtab Rashdi, Chairperson of the TRC – IECE, thanking participants for their attendance, congratulating the graduates and inviting guests for refreshments.

What is the Early Childhood Education Certificate Programme (ECE-CP)?

The ECE-CP is an early years’ education programme, committed to developing and supporting early childhood professionals. It is an academically rigorous programme, yet flexible in its approach. It has been developed in collaboration with our institutional partners, Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, and Ryerson University in Canada. This innovative programme is the first of its kind in the country.

The institutional linkage between the partners, has been supported by the Aga Khan Foundation (Pakistan) through the Pakistan-Canada Social Institutions Development Programme, in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency.

Why should I choose ECE as a career?

Are you concerned about children, about education and schooling, about competitiveness, about values and violence in our society? Well, research tells us that it is in the early years that the foundation for the kind of people we will become, are established. Do you want to make a difference to the way the adults and decision makers of tomorrow conduct themselves, their businesses and raise their families? By working with the young children of today, you can help shape the future.

In Pakistan, there is a great need for professional early years’ teachers. At present, the only validated ECE programmes are based on the Montessori approach to ECE.
